This piece is inspired by my experiences as the sister of two autistic twin brothers. A friend of mine who didn’t know what my theme was, saw a primary photo I took for the unit, and commented “he looks autistic”, highlighting the stereotypical misunderstandings about this condition. To that I responded, “And what do you think autistic people should look like?” I truly believe that every autistic person is unique, they don’t look a certain way and that they don’t deserve to be labelled and stereotyped. This project is my attempt to share the lesser-understood sides of autism with the goal of building empathy and awareness. Autism is a complex condition that manifests differently in each person. My artwork illustrates that there is no one way to’ ‘look autistic’, although they often seem to be ‘locked’ in their own world, they get to experience the world in a different way and tend to live happier in this chaotic world. I hope this project promotes understanding of the diverse realities of autism and helps counter stereotypical views of this condition.
